Our whole family enjoys going to Kanpai and we have been going there since it opened. The owner and the manager know us by name and could probably tell you what we order most often….

July 20, 2009 – Really likes it – Like the originator, Benihanna, Kanpai boasts chefs who cook your food at your table. I’m sure there are better showmen than our chef was but the food tasted great. We felt rushed to leave by the waitress because of the crowded Saturday night dinner service, which we found a bit tacky. She repeatedly asked whether we wanted to wrap our food to go (which began 10 minutes after the chef finished cleaning up). If you don’t know what the show is supposed to look like, it was adequate but if you go, go for the food.

January 17, 2009 – Really likes it
I generally order the dinner specials. I’ll copy and paste them from http://www.KanpaiWS.com

Well the place is positioned in the Middle of the Busiest Street in Winston-Salem. It’s right next to the Putt Putt/ Adventure Landing, and right across from Hanes Mall. Staff is very nice, quick, and will try to make sure your visit is great. Though I will say the atmosphere is like a family fanfare, where 8-10 people from different parties can join at one table, large fires, flaming and flying shrimp, and funny antics by the Chef are a GREAT PLACE FOR THE FAMILY, FRIENDS, AND COUPLES. For couples I would Recommend the Kanpai for 2…just remember to blow out the fire so you can drink the 151. For young adults/ college: Sake BOMBS!!! For the kids I would recommend the Shirley Temple.Food is in great proportions. You have mounds of rice and vegetables, more than adequate amount of seafood and good ole MEAT like Filet Mignon, Lobster, shrimp, Chicken, Fish etc.
Pros: Amount of Food, Special Dinner Prices, Drink Specials, Staff, and a FRIENDLY environment.Cons: almost always busy, I would recommend RSVP…but even then I would expect between 10-30 min wait….this place is BUSY!!!!
In Summary I would recommend this place to EVERYONE!!

January 22, 2009 – Likes it – Oh Kee Nee,I love this place. I go here every birthday, celebration, and outing. Its a 2 hour drive from Durham, and even with gas prices soaring, I would never give up a chance to eat here. I’ve been going to this place for about 8 years, ever since my girlfriend at the time introduced me to the wonderful atmosphere of Japanese Cookery!. 8 years later, and atleast 30 visits later, I always have a GRAND spectacular time. Now that I have 2 kids, I can’t wait to bring them in for a “VOLCANO Surprise.” << make sure you ask for that!!!! Atmosphere is great, and they finally added that outside patio, MUCH NEEDED!!. Bar selection is great, staff an chefs are always nice. And THE FOOD IS ALWAYS SPECTACULAR!!!Now, I am a pretty hefty eater, I can down a 1 lb burger easily, but everytime I go to KANPAI, I Always order the Imperial Dinner. It comes with Fillet mignon, lobster, shrimp and scallops. And I think all dinners come with Soup, Salad an Shrimp Appetizer. Well back to the point, I eat a lot, and in my 8 years, Have never been able to finish a whole plate. I always take it home. Well for the recommendations. +I recommend the Green Dinosaur as a drink (Wife loves it)+If you get the filet mignon I usually ask for medium rare, as it has the best flavor and texture. +The white an ginger sauce Oh, one last thing. Out of the +30 times I’ve been there, I actually was able to meet Wake Forest Basketball Players, A Detroit Lions Running Back, a NC House of Representative, and a Nascar Driver. I wish I remembered the names…but I do have pictures.. I;ll try to post them up if i find them. KANPAI !!! Where everybody knows your name!!!!

Kanpai: The one-chop stop for Japanese joy

There are two words that can describe Kanpai Japanese Steakhouse on 1438 South Stratford Road — culinary euphoria. The food is great, the price is right and for two cursed pedestrian freshmen, this trip was definitely worth a $9 cab fare.
After two weeks of dining in the Pit and Benson, this trip was nothing short of spectacular. Let’s just say that with approximately 50 campus meals under our belts, we were ready to welcome any change, and Kanpai superceded even our greatest expectations. We left the restaurant fully satiated with that warm, happy, full feeling that you just can’t find on campus. Enough with all the details —here’s the low down on one of Winston-Salem’s delicious Japanese restaurants.
Since Kanpai is a Japanese steakhouse, its specialty is hibachi. For those of you who are not familiar with this type of cuisine, the food is prepared on a hibachi grill right before your eyes. A mixture of vegetables, rice and your choice of seafood, poultry or beef is typically saut….

Too MUCH food for one sitting
Too MUCH food for one sitting
….I went with a family of four, I had the Shrimp/Scallop/Salmon for like 16 dollars; and after the Chef (very friendly and very funny) finished making the food, I had about a mound of Fried rice, more than half a dozen scallops, vegetables and rice overfilling the plate, freshly cooked shrimp, and a very nicely cooked salmon. Anywhere else and you would pay a premium for this kind of food. Def!!! worth every penny. I joked with my brother telling him that he had enough food feed a third world country. (By the way, I usually eat quite a lot, and when my Brother and I can’t finish a meal, it usually means its more than a LOT) I recommend going early. I went there two days ago and from 4pm-6:30pm is the best time; but after that and it gets incredibly busy. Staff members are incredibly nice and friendly, hostess and hosts are straightforward and prompt <– generally more active and run around a lot. Parking was plentiful, and the aroma of cooking was delightful. Anyways, I recommend this place over any Japanese rest. around winston-salem. Its one of the oldest ones here, i think it was opened in the 90’s…correct me if i’m wrong. Hope you all enjoy it like me and my family did. We will certainly go back in the coming week.
Pros: FOOD, PARKING, STAFF, and FOOOOD lots of it. Big TABLES!!
Cons: Its loud, but mostly from the cooking and people clapping during birthdays

Good time!: This place always has a full house. The food is great, the chefs are fun, and you leave more than full. If you like the idea of your food being cooked in front of you, check this place out!

The best in the Triad!: Kan Pai has, by far, the best Japanese cuisine in Winston Salem as well as one of the most friendliest staffs of all restaurants — Bar none! .
It has great food, prepared at your table (which the children as well as adults really like), and it comes at a fairly reasonable price. Great for special occasions, too.

I am a regular, so I go every week, I can’t get enough of it!! . I would recommend the steak and shrimp, its delicious. They also give you alot of food for what you are paying, . but its worth the price. The soup is delicious and the vegetables that come with the meal. I would recommend Kanpai to anyone!!

| This is an excellent place for the entire family to go. My children’s day care center takes their school-age kids at least twice a year. The chefs are talented, entertaining for the kids as well as the adults, and give the kids information and special pricing. All in all, the experience is very worthwhile and culturally enlightening. | ||

| EXCELLENT. It is as wonderful…. Food and service are always outstanding, along with cooking “show” at the grill. Wonderful for dates, special evenings with the spouse, or celebrations. | ||
